Notes Notes 8.5.3 won't go past splash screen and loading please wait

I am experiencing the exact same issue.

I was running Notes 8.5.1 and tried to update to 8.5.3.

When I start Notes (notes.exe) I am prompted to log in. I do so and then the splash screen comes up with Loading ... please wait. I left the machine running overnight and it was still the same in the morning.
